Exploration of atmosphere and emotion is the essence of Jim Gunardson's work. Working in a style described as "stylized realism", Jim extracts the impression of the subject by visualizing its unique light, color and essential forms. Along with his traditional work, Jim also works in a digital medium. This digital work is similar to his classic painting style with a modern flair. Jim's interest in the outdoors, exploring and traveling have a direct influence on his work.
Jim graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida with a B.F.A in illustration. His work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide including New York, Florida and Japan and his illustrations have appeared in national magazines such as Adirondack Life, Delaware Today and IBM Systems. Online his work has been a feature of many digital publications.
From 1998 to 2004 Jim lived in the Adirondack mountains of New York and exhibited at many shows in the region. Notably winning numerous awards at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and having a solo exhibition in Ticonderoga, New York. Jim has also served as a juror for competitions.
In 2000 Jim won the prestigious Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks competition. His painting "Summertime" was used for the cover of the annual ACNA directory and the work was purchased by a board member of the New York Arts Council.
Since 2004 Jim has exhibited and worked in New Jersey and has recently won an award for his painting "Birches". Currently Jim works as a full-time artist and runs Visual Elixir, a small studio specializing in illustration and interaction design.
